Digital TV

Glossary

G

Ginga

it’s the specification for the intermediary software layer standard (middleware) developed for the Brazilian Digital TV System by Puc-RJ and UFPB.

H

HDMI

HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) is a type of connection that will be the visual audio reproduction standard, due to a technology that allows to mix the digital information of both image and sound for broadcasting without loss of data. This is the best solution for high definition. It is already available in some high definition DVD players, and TV sets.

"HD Ready" Television

A TV set with an analogical tuner, but capable of reproducing images with a definition of 720 or 1080 horizontal lines. With an ISDB digital converter, it can display high definition images sent by Digital TV broadcasting stations in Brazil.

HDTV Television (High Definition TV)

TV sets that can reproduce images with a 720 or 1080 horizontal lines definition. The models in which native definition is 1080 lines, if the progressive scan functionality is available, can display images with 1080 lines of progressive horizontal definition (1080p), and are known as FULL HD. When used in 1080i signal sources (i.e.: HD broadcast) or 1080p (i.e.: high definition DVD), these sets can display the best definition available in High Definition mode.

I

Image Format (4:3 / 16:9)

Those numbers represent the ratio between screen width and height; Every HDTV broadcast will be made in the 16:9 format, much similar to the one used in films (analogical).

Integrated ISDB Television (Integrated Digital Converter)

Regardless of technology (CRT, Plasma, LCD or Projection), this is the one that has an integrated digital converter. This means that these devices can receive Digital TV signals in the ISDB standard (high definition Digital TV standard adopted in Brazil), directly from the antenna, without the need of another equipment to convert the signal (converter).

Interactivity Component

This is the term created by TQTVD to classify each and every application sent by the open Digital TV signal that allows the user to interact with the application using the receiver’s remote control.

Interlaced Scan (i)

Although the images we see in TV sets appear to fill out the whole screen at once, they are formed by many lines. The image is called interlaced because firstly all the odd lines 1,3,5,7 etc. are displayed, and only after the whole screen is filled with these lines, the reproduction of the even lines 2,4,6,8 etc. is started. Most kinescope type TV sets available in the market use this technology.

ISDB Converter or Digital ISDB Converter

This is the component that converts the Digital TV signal to display the images in the television, also known as "set-top box". The converter can be sold separately as a "Set Top Box", or incorporated (integrated) into the television set. The Converter can offer different types of outputs, among them: HDMI, Video Component, S-video or Composite Video, and also analogical and digital audio outputs.

ISDB Digital TV - Broadcasting (open signal)

The terrestrial TV signal broadcasted digitally. The major benefit of this system is that there is no loss of quality in the broadcasting process. Both image and audio retain 100% of the original signal quality, eliminating the typical noise and interference of the analogical system.

ISDB-TB (Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting – Terrestrial)

Acronym for the Brazilian Digital TV Terrestrial system. It was developed in Japan and adopted in Brazil with some changes.
