Middleware for Digital TV: It's the intermediate software layer that allows the development of interactive applications for Digital TV, regardless of the hardware platform used by set-top box manufacturers.

Ginga: It’s the specification for the intermediary software layer standard (middleware) developed for the Brazilian Digital TV System by Puc-RJ and UFPB.

Interactivity Component: This is the term created by TQTVD to classify each and every application sent by the open Digital TV signal that allows the user to interact with the application using the receiver’s remote control.

ASTROTV Middleware

The AstroTV middleware is the commercial implementation of the Ginga Middleware which is 100% compatible to the Brazilian specification.

AstroTV is able to run interactive applications developed in languages such as Java, NCL or LUA. Those applications could be native (embedded by the manufacturer directly in the set-top box memory) or transmitted via digital signal by the TV networks.

Available for the main Digital TV hardware platforms, the AstroTV middleware features optimized functionality which allows deployment with low memory and processing requirements. The middleware can be embedded in set-top boxes, mobile receivers, portable devices and digital TVs.

Functionalities

AstroTV allows the following possibilities:

  • Full Interactivity, allowing the TV spectator to communicate with the broadcaster through the return channel, in scenarios such as polls, quizzes, games and publicity campaigns;

  • Extended Content Programming in Entertainment and Information areas, allowing extras to be included in TV shows, such as games, news, publicity, rich content, sports statistics, etc;

  • T-gov actions: t-government interactive applications will favor the digital inclusion. IRS, voting, records, newsletters, scheduling and announcements of public interest are some of the examples which will answer the needs of governement areas such as Education, Health and Finance;

  • Portability: allows the use of interactivity on mobile phones, PDAs and other portable devices enabling new scenarios with the use of technologies such as location, presence, voice, etc.
